Wind and scent cones on a hunting map: pick the right stand for today's wind | HuntLease Scout

Wind and scent

Know which stand the wind is right for before you leave the truck.

Tell each stand which winds it likes. Open Conditions and the app draws where your scent is going today, from every one of them, and ranks the stands for you.

Free to mark and track. Scout adds offline maps, forecasts, wind and 3D for $30 a year.

Scent cones

Where your scent goes, drawn on the ground

Human scent carries roughly 200 yards in a calm and up to 500 in a strong wind, in a cone that widens as the air gets rougher. Scout draws that cone downwind of every stand and blind, using the wind at the property right now.

  • Green: the wind is within 30° of a direction you marked as good for that stand
  • Amber: marginal, 30° to 60° off
  • Red: your scent is blowing where the deer come from
  • Grey: you have not set winds for that stand yet

Tap "Scent from a spot" to drop a cone anywhere, for a spot you have not marked yet.

Wind arrows

A grid of arrows across the view, coloured by speed, so you read the wind on the terrain instead of from a number in the corner.

Thermals

Warm air climbs slopes after sunrise and sinks after sunset. The panel says which is happening now and what it means for where to sit on a hillside.

Best stands today

Every stand ranked good, marginal or bad for the wind right now. Tap one to fly there.

Forecast

Hourly wind for the next two days, five days out

The conditions panel shows the wind, temperature and rain chance for every three hours over the next 48, and a five-day outlook, plus the barometer with a rising or falling arrow. The last forecast you loaded stays on the phone, marked with how old it is, for when you open the panel in the stand with no bars.

Current weather, the sun and moon, and your state's season dates are free. Hourly, five-day, wind arrows and scent cones are part of Scout.

Seasons

When does archery open? The panel knows.

The conditions panel lists your state's published season dates for the species you pick: "Archery deer · Oct 3 – Nov 20 · open, 41 days left". Dates and the agency's own page, nothing more; zones, bag limits and weapon rules stay with the agency, and the panel says to verify before you hunt.
